Title: TUDM FA-18
Description: Alor Setar Airbase (WMKA) Open Day

kuman - April 16, 2007 03:48 AM (GMT)
:D

ok people.. here is some picture from the recent Open Day
proceed and enjoy the picture as i enjoyed taking them.

i hope none of the pictures is a sensitive material.. if they're please let me know..

Experience
- my hands tremble and shaking continously when i first touch this "beauty", and i'm speechless for about 10 mins before i can start taking pictures.. the sight of this craft in person is MUCH-MUCH-MUCH different than looking at pictures...

- i was like a lil kid, running around the craft taking picture.. until one of the pilot stopped me and asked ".. minat betul dengan FA18 ni yek!!"

- from this experience... TUDM FA-18 build from me is Imminent!!! just a matter of time.. hmm which brand should fit the bill.. anyone?

- The color is a bit darker than i would expect.. its a tone of Dark Grey from Tamiya range.

Wah.... Quickly go and build one lah... :P

kerastangan - April 16, 2007 07:17 AM (GMT)
Hmm lucky you, the nozzle was covered up the whole morning.

Well, if they're sensitive, nobody can take the pics at all! Hmm I wonder if our pilots are like the Americans. I read somewhere that mentioning that one is a modeller works wonders.

As for the kits. Well, there's Hasegawa in 1/72, Italeri and Hasegawa in 1/48 and Academy in 1/32. f4dable models makes a nice sheet of decals in all scales plus update parts in 1/32.

You are right anyway buddy. Even though I already have a Hornet in 1/72, after seeing the real article, I am extremely tempted to get the Academy 1/32 Hornet!

kuman - April 16, 2007 07:33 AM (GMT)
yup.. just a few minutes after my picture taking moments of the nozzle, they cover it up again... maybe to avoid fumes coming out from there.. :)

now i'm very itch to build one already.. but in 1/32 scale is just too much for me.. but never knew if i can land a bargain kit they maybe i'll make another 1/32 scale :D

as for the 1/48 offering, how fair is the Italeri ones?

the urges..urges..

Good pictures there, kuman and thanks for sharing your photo collection. Will be useful for my F-18C if and when I get around to building it.

Check out Aircraft Resource Center.

I don't think Italeri produce much of a good -C though neither do their -E/F in 48 scale, don't waste your time on them. Cash out a little bit on the Hase kit and save all the hassle. If you're planning a -D, the next best bet is still Hase! Go get 'em!!

Nice pics Kuman.

f4dable make a VERY detailed decal sheet for TUDM Hornets and even includes all the stuff you need to make it an accurate TUDM Hornet.

The colour used on the TUDM Hornet is Gunship Grey, FS36118. Gunze has that colour under number 305.

Correct me if I'm wrong but there're also some additions to the TUDM Hornet, which of course, f4dable's sheet will tell you about.

Kuman,

I would recommend building one in 1/32 - not b'cos I made the decals or the update parts, but because it is more straightforward.

In 1/48, you would probably use the Hase D kit, but this is actually an early D (possibly Lot 12) and lots pf work is needed to bring it up to Lot 18 standard (TUDM is broadly comparable to this).

I have built 3 1/48 TUDM D models to date:

1x conversion from Monogram (Revell) F/A-18C - using Italeri B canopy & parts
1x conversion from Monogram F/A-18A - using Italeri F/A-18F canopy & parts
1x Italeri F/A-18A/B updated to D

All are posted on ARC somewhere.

The Italeri kit is probably the least painless method, but you will have to scratch build a lot of antenna (blad & blister) from plastic strip and epoxy putty, and the cockpit is very very poor.

Shape wise, the Italeri kit is also a bit out. My Italeri D is on display at HHQ.

f-4dablemodels - April 17, 2007 09:49 AM (GMT)
Kuman,

Ya, with the Academy F/A-18D, you only need:

1. TUDM decals
2. ALE-47 twin dispenser & GPS dome set
3. SJU-17 NACES seats

The Hase 1/48 kit needs a multitude of updates, not all of which are readily available.

Kuman,

You have all this nice pictures of close-ups and details and all and it will be a waste not to have this on your model. When you're building a 1/48 it will not give you the satisfaction of adding all the details since you know it's there, unless you build a 1/32 scale...

Give in to the dark side.... Get the 1/32 scale...

Just wait until the Su-30MKM is revealed to the public! :)

I've set a target: buy that Academy Night Hornet within a year's time! (Before my gaji kena potong for housing loan!)

Kuman,

Build a couple of 72nds under your belt before even think of going to 48ths. Don't run.

The prints are rather shallow from the original. This is the best I can scan and post.
