Title: 50th Merdeka GB: CL-41G Tebuan
Description: ... some bad news here
aidy - April 9, 2007 07:53 AM (GMT)
Ok guys,
It is with some regret that I withdraw my 1/48 Tebuan build from this year's event. I lost a tussle with Gravity over the Tebuan late last week, causing the model a degree of damage after impacting the floor with some force. This kit has fought me all the way, and now this crash has left me with no more spirit to continue beating this one into submission... at least not in the near future.
There still exists a remote chance that I might re-start and finish this model for this years' event, but I wouldn't bet any money on it (not that I could anyway, ).
I did, however, manage to take some pre-crash photos of the primered Tebuan showing the modifications I did to turn the Hobbycraft Tutor into a CL-41G. I hope this will be of some help to someone.
Pics to come soon.
druid_99 - April 9, 2007 08:10 AM (GMT)
Too bad... hopefully it still can be rescued and completed for the event.
kuman - April 9, 2007 08:41 AM (GMT)
:(
hope it can recover soon...
Human have been trying to defy gravity since the longest time.. i guess this one didnt manage to defy it :(
can show the "damage" picture as well aidy?

Sorry to hear about the crash. :(
Anyway, a remote chance is better than none - all the best in conducting repairs.

Aidy,
Don't be despair!! Let see the extend of the damage first. Probably it might need a total D check and who knows, it probably just need B check.
Sarge.

Thanks for the encouragement, guys. I might still finish the model for this years' event as I'm not about to admit defeat just yet... but I'll concede the first round to the model. After all, hero kena kalah dulu :D
Here are the pics, with captions to highlight my additions.

Here's one of the pilots. My references show our pilots equipped with life jackets which I added using epoxy putty (Bondite). The details were cut in while the putty was still soft. I wanted to add some shoulder patches but I can't paint it nicely enough so I ditched the idea.

Here's a shot showing how I did the FOD guards. This area was badly damaged last week and I had to remove everything - splitter plates and screen - on both sides. If I do rebuild it this year, I'll probably just use the kit splitter plates.

This is where the most distinctive feature of the Tebuan is located - the chin radome. Bondite was used for the radome and bulged main gear doors. My reference for all this work was the 70-odd pics I took over 2 trips to the Sg Besi Museum.

Some detail work and the fuel dump vent (which is still missing after the crash). The fuel dump vent was a modified 1/72 Sea King tail rotor... good thing is that you get 6 blades in every box! I got the angle by visually comparing the model to an almost 1/48-ish picture I printed earlier.

I re-shaped the windscreen blowers as the kit parts were too squarish. The wing lights were filled with putty as the kit transparencies did not fit at all. I did add some lenses inside and tried to use several different materials for the cover, but wasn't satisfied with the outcome so out came the putty... I didn't worry though as the lights were painted black on top anyway

The landing gears received some hydraulic lines/details made of 32 gauge steel wire. The kit main gears were also lacking the scissor/torque(?) links which I added using strip styrene and bits of stretched sprue.
I hope the pics will be helpful for those wishing to build a better Tebuan. I can't claim to have been very accurate but I think I got most of the more obvious features of the Tebuan covered. I would appreciate all the feedback I can get as it could help me rebuild this one better (also have another in the stash too! ;) ). Perhaps Bud, mr b, masterqq or others can point out what I missed?

Just relax from it, don't mind boggle yourself.....let it stay on the shelf or bench for a while and once you're ready, fire it away again.
We all be there somehow....... :P

Aidy,
Looking good as always. Now some pointers:-
1) You got the crew wearing the LPU right. Orange colour. Bonedome - HGU33 style, correct. Please have it in white.
2) U need to have 4 (each side) bottom and top vertical air vent at the fuselage nose section area (near the cockpit wall/line - equipment bay door). Please refer to your pics.
3) Air intake splitter assy looks good (try to make it more thinner)
4) There a handle embedded onto the fuselage nose section bay (equipment bay door). This is slanted. Check your pics.
5) Don't forget your pitot tube on starboard section.
6) Don't forget your main landing gear uplock assembly (provided in the kit?). I don't see it here.
7) There's a main landing gear door actuating mechanism for the main landing gear door (provided?). You can use A37B part over here.
8) There's no pictures of the nose gear here. Don't forget the oleo scissors! Again, A37B nose gear can be used.
9) Gun sight - much more simplified. Now if someone can guide me on how to post pictures, I can help this boy!!! Or Aidy, pls advise me your e-mail. I'll scan it for you my boy!
10) Wingtip. There should be a line (not two) cut across until the bottom of the wing tip light section/structure. You need to scribe an extra line based on the first line provided on the kit.
Well, hope this helps. You're almost there. Remember, enjoy this hobby and master of critique is oneself.

Some on the list I haven't gotten to, some I still don't know how to do, some I chose to ignore... but some I had no idea! Thanks for pointing those out, Sarge.
Anyone know where I can get my hands on a Monogram A-37? (No...not evilbay, please  )

Aidy My Boy,
I do have a spare A37B for donor parts (like the movie: The Island!). Tell me what you're looking for and I'll dig the stuff this weekend.
Nah, the list is not that long. This is just a hobby. Realism is subjective.
