Title: 50th Merdeka GB: Adnan IFV
Alpha7 - March 13, 2007 03:25 AM (GMT)
Here are some progress on my Adnan build. I will be using AFV Club's YPR-765 as the base kit. I got this from HHQ during the CNY sale.

The Adnan consists of a few sub-variants. The one I plan to make is the IFV version which is armed with a 25mm Bushmaster cannon.
A few differences immediately becomes obvious. The Adnan has (1) a different turret, (2) a bulkier trim vane and (3) extra smoke dischargers at the rear. It was difficult finding reference materials for the Adnan. There were a handful of photos from the net so I decided to email BTDM (Bulletin Tentera Darat Malaysia) and FNSS (the vehicle manufacturer) for reference materials. I had no luck getting any response and decided to scale it off photos.

I drew the plans and made paper mock-ups to see if it was accurate. The trim vane appears to be fairly accurate but alas, the turret was way off scale.
It was then that I received a reply from Cem Altinisik of FNSS. (Turns out that Cem is also a modeller. You can view some of his work
here) He suggested I used the AFV Club AIFV as the base kit (the YPR-765 is similar) and that he will send me blueprints for the Sharpshooter turret. While waiting this, I went ahead and built the basic hull of the Adnan.

Construction of the trim vane was fairly straight forward. Just used some styrene sheets to build up the shape. The difficult part will be in cutting the necessary openings and recreating the anti-slip coating. Photo shows the 1st stage of reconstruction. I decided against reconstructing the whole trim vane and instead just glued sheets to the sides of the existing kit part. The part will appear a little thicker but it would also be more rigid.

Cem sent me some new photos of the vehicle and the blueprint for the turret. It is about the same size as the kit turret and will require extending the rear a little and rounding the profile. The periscopes also need to be rearranged. The Adnan only has 4 while the YPR-765 has 5.
Until the next update...........

Great start there. Another armour progress in this Group Build.
Wow, you got the blueprints direct from the source... I'm building mine (Harimau Scout Car) only with reference pictures. I got one questions though. Is the blueprint of the turret is in scale?
Alpha7 - March 13, 2007 03:59 AM (GMT)
The blueprints provided were not in 1/35 scale. I don't know what scale they were in and since I don't know the actual measurements of the turret I had to make some assumptions. I took a photo of the side profile of the Adnan and scaled it down to 1/35 scale. Next, I overlaid the blueprint over this photo and scale it until the turret matched. I think it is fairly accurate. :D

Oh, ok... that's a very "different" way of resizing the pictures... :D Totally different than mine.

Good progress Adrian. You're off to a great start and it looks an interesting project as well. Looking forward to see more pics.

Adrian,
fantastic start. This will be a wonderful addition to the display.
kuman - March 13, 2007 05:31 AM (GMT)
good progress.... ADrian..
hope to see more... :D
hmm i wonder if we can have enough of this Adnan variant for the Group Build... since i know that they (ATM) have a few variance...
keep them coming adrian.. :))

Alpha7,
Just an observation.
It looks like the Adnan's turret is in fact the same as the YPR-765 AIFV's turret, but with more spaced armour panels bolted on.
Would this observation be of help to you in your work?

It appears to be similar or at least from the same lineage. When I first looked at photos of the turret, it appeared larger but this was probably due to optical illusion. Once I compared it to the blueprint, it scales out to be the same. Just have to add some 'padding' to the front and rear of the turret. Other than that, the periscopes and smoke dischargers are the only other difference.

Alpha 7,
I built this quite a while ago with Malaysian camo. This kit is from Academy. This was one of the very first kit I built since I came back into modelling. Not much weathering.
I am looking forward to your Adnan.
Cheers!

sorry to "mencelah" a bit.. :D
so choongwk will this be making it debut public appearance during the Merdeka Group Build show? will make a nice additions to the Adnan line-up for the show... now if only anyone would tackle the Adnan Fitter/Recovery :D
- This Academy is the R.O.K KIFV K-200 APC kit is it?
Alpha7
- You'll also be doing the same one is it?
waiting to see more of the WIP.... i "might" be "brewing" 1 of this Adnan for the GB as well.. :D but not sure which variant yet.... maybe the Fitter.. ;)

Nice one there, choongwk. It'll be a nerve wrecking experience for me painting the camo as I've never done camo before. But that's still a long way to go. :D
kuman, I'll be building the Adnan IFV version. It comes with a 1-man "Sharpshooter" turret. The one that choongwk built is the Korean-made K-200, which is technically not known as an Adnan. I believe the MAF calls it the MIFV.
Progress has been slow due to work. I do hope to clock in the hours on Saturday to get more done.
Note: While the MIFV and the Adnan may look similar, there are some very clear differences between the 2 vehicles. The rear compartment of the Adnan appears to be higher (more headroom?). The Adnan is also longer because it has 2 protruding fuel tanks (?) at the rear. So if you intend to build an Adnan, you have to use AFV Club's Nato AIFV or YPR-765 as basekits.
Alpha7 - March 30, 2007 04:31 AM (GMT)
A minor progress update.

The past weeks have been spent fabricating the trim vane and turret. The former can be considered completed. The latter still requires some work.

The trim vane was built up using styrene sheets. The weld seam in front is a little too pronounced when this photo was taken. It has since been sanded down.

I had problems shaping the rounded front portion of the turret. After numerous failed attempts, I took out my hacksaw and sawed off the front. I rebuilt it with styrene and 2-part putty. Still a lot of filing to go as the shape is still off and unsymmetrical. I have yet to figure out how I'm going to attach the cannon!

As if that wasn't enough work, I discovered that the Adnan had some extra storage added to the rear fenders. I had to make do with guesswork as I didn't have enough photos to visualize the shape.

Here's what I came up with. There is still a divider to be added to the middle and another protrusion to be added to the right of this assembly. Then there is the smoke grenade launcher mount to be scratchbuilt. Will again have to rely on guesswork as I do not know how these are attached to the vehicle. Anyone has a top view of the mounts?

The antenna mounts are also different. The YPR-765's are tall and slim while the Adnan's are the opposite. I cut off the top portion of the mounts and added strips of styrene to thicken the base. The Adnan also has some sort of ventilation/exhaust pipes that I modelled using a lollipop stick and some plastic sheet.

Adrian,
argghh.......there are 2 more boxes of the base kit in HHQ.....
must resist........
Alpha7 - June 14, 2007 12:28 AM (GMT)
After taking some time off to rethink, I have decided to scratch build a new turret for my Adnan. I wasn't too happy with the old one as it was a wee bit distorted and I had trouble sanding it back to shape.

Old turret with periscopes removed. These were transplanted to the new turret.

New turret. Still needs lots of bolts and rivets. The gun mantlet is made from the tip of a pen. It's not exactly the right shape but should do. One option is to salvage one from a Bradley kit but I think I'll just 'close one eye' here.

Some additional storage added to the rear left. The rear grenade launcher mount can be seen above. This is pure guess work as I couldn't find any reference photos of the mount. The Adnan also has an antenna mounted at the top of the rear left light mount. This will be added later.

The right side. The spare track was mounted vertically so some filling and sanding was needed to fill up the holes. 2 antenna mounts were added. Also can be seen is the right side grenade mount.

Overall rear view showing extra parts added to the IFV.

One thing that has been bugging me is this device. Anyone can shade some light regarding this? It would appear that the top portion can swivel as can be seen when you compare the 2 photos.
That's all for now. I still have lots of grenade launch tubes to fabricate. :(
Alpha7 - July 26, 2007 01:30 AM (GMT)
Here's another update of my Adnan build. It's been glacial to say the least!
The main additions center around the small details. I had initial thought of making tie-downs using wire (ala Darth Pooh) but knowing how clumsy I was with superglue, I decided to use stretch sprue instead. This way I could use plastic cement to attach them. The technique is very simple. Stretch a length of sprue. Using your fingernails, form it over a strip of styrene so that you end up with the required shape. Then snip it to size. I'm quite happy with the results.

I also decided to redo the 'vent' covers. Firstly, I realized that the base was more rounded so I cut it to shape and added 2 bolts. I also wanted to add more details to the vent covers because my 1st attempt was quite pathetic. This I fashioned out of plastic rod and pieces of styrene. It's still not that accurate but at least it's an improvement.

The turret also received some detailing. Added the bolts and rivets which I hope will look good once the model is primed. I've also glued on 2 grenade launchers. These were taken from the kit but I have to scratchbuild another 6 more to be placed behind the turret. Why is our army so obsessed with tie-downs and grenade launchers!??

Side view showing some early visualization of the camo patterns. The grenade launcher 'station' at the rear is now populated, but still requires some work. All in all, the vehicle has 24 grenade launchers! 8 at the back, 8 on the turret and 8 in front.

That's all for now.
PoohBear - July 26, 2007 01:46 AM (GMT)
Wow, Adrian, your tie downs look fantastic. If I were you, I'd be extremely happy about the results.
Keep up the great work :)

ahh.. i missed this nice build...
andrian, good effort pal... good work..
i was so envy that u managed to get the drawing from the source. Once i email the company who did the cockerill 90mm cannon for the dimension of the cockerill gun, but i havent got any reply at all even i email several times... you're very lucky bro!!
the pen casing was creative touch
so any more progress photos??
there's a good photos inside TEMPUR (last year issue) which have several photos of Adnan...if u need to borrow it let me know or maybe i can scan the mag..
good luck bro

Thanks for the encouragement, guys.
Silantra, I would be grateful if you could scan the mag for me, even though it may already be too late to made any corrections. Maybe in future I might consider scratchbuilding the anti-tank or HMG variant. :D
beachbum - July 26, 2007 09:25 AM (GMT)
Very good progress and impressive scratch work as well Adrian. A worthy addition to the Merdeka GB ground forces which are increasing nicely.

i'm not sure if this is too late for you.. but the latest issue of TEMPUR - August 2007 magazine got a lot of reference picture of the Adnan & Stormer and a few artillery featured in a few pages of colourful pages.....
will be great to those (or you) that going to build Adnan later on... :D
just thought i share only...:D

Thanks. I just read it yesterday. There's quite a number of photos of various types of Adnans. As for my build, I've decided to just complete it, warts, flaws and all as I'm running out of time. :(
I still hope to be able to walkaround an actual Adnan one day. Anyone knows if there's one on static display this merdeka?
kuman - August 9, 2007 07:39 AM (GMT)
well.. i think i missed the chance to ado a full walkaround of the Adnan when i missed the "Perkampungan Islam Hadhari" event in Alor Setar last month.. since i saw they usually have at least 1 Adnan on display...
the next event will be in Kelantan.. and think sometime in future they will be coming to KL as well... so during that day.. you can have a field day photographing this tank.. :D
yea.. the upcoming Merdeka Parade will be a good oppurtinity also.. :D
