My God! How long did it take you till this stage. Very impressive.
So far i've only known modelers from outside our country who'd attempt such a project.
With you around we can beef up ship modeling enthusiasm and liven up the forum on ships.
Flabbergasted,
Richard.

nice and grand project!
judging from the funnel shape in the first pic, I guess that C130 is modelling the HMS Malaya after the major refit in 1930's.

Dear Charlie 130 ,
You would recall ,I had told you I had build 3 units of the "Revenge" class battleships in 1/500 scale (Revenge/Ramilies/Resolution)Frog kits They share the same superstructure ,would be glad to let you have one as a sample to complete your Malaya .It shares the same commmand structure ie 1930 ,will show you the actual picture over the next few days !
Silver
For those interested you can find the HMS Royal Resolution in Revell kit.(Actually Frog/Novo kits)
History
They are classed as fast battle ships and slightly smaller than the Queen Elizabeths (HMS Malaya ,a sistership of the class). Most are used for convoy duties after HMS Royal Oak (4th of the Revenge class) was sunk at whilst in Scapa Flow by a u boat sneeking into the base, which gave the British admiralty a smack on the face! and the u boat captain the Iron Cross with Diamond leaf by Adolf Hitler and Herr Gobbels!
emechelmi - December 20, 2006 05:52 AM (GMT)
something to add, 'Revenge' class BBs were designed as a cheaper alternative to QE Class.
Royal Oak was sunk by U-47 commanded by Gunther Prien.
druid_99 - December 20, 2006 06:57 AM (GMT)
Charlie 130,
What did you use for the base of the ship? Previously I used Jelutong wood for the base and plastic for other parts.
charlie130 - December 20, 2006 07:56 AM (GMT)
OK. Charlie Speaking,
If you are contemplating on scratch building be ready to fork out RM$$ on balsa wood.
Prices of balsa is out of this world in Malaysia. Dealers tell me it is the taxes.
If anyone know about a source of cheap balsa please tell.
Yes the hull is made of balsa, strip by strip from bow to stern. Then you sand to shape, then you apply car putty. After that you become very good at car puttying so when you bump you car you need not go to the repair shop anymore!
Sorry there is no size comparison. The hull, if you stand it up is more than five feet.
For me I am building everything from scratch, after which I shall cast the duplicate ones.
Anyone is an expert on casting in resin. Let me know. I need help here.
Of course you can buy most of these parts overseas, but that will take the fun out of in.
Not to mention the challenge. I am thoroughlly enjoying it right now.
Wait till you see the pix on the planking. 1/8th of an inch x about 2 inch long. Ooh the last time i counted there were about 250 pieces glued. Amd that is only the bow and stern. Mid-ship not yet.
I hope to also scratch build the smaller guns. Mmm.. of course I can buy them off the rack.
The last time I scratch built a gun (it was the 17pounder, or was it an 18 pounder? anyway this was for the Saxton, (Richie _ you know wat a saxton is dont you?)
So, nobody told me there is a kit by Tamiya, and yours truly being not much of a tank buster, went and scratch built one and put it in the saxton!
I have since bought up all the available Tamiya 17/18 pounder!!!
Back to the boat...right not i am waiting for the plans of HMS Malaya to arrive. I sent for them from the National Maritim Museum, London. I actually visited them in July 2005. But did not get hold of them because the day before my appointment, the Underground train was bombed. (I was actually on the train to Hanants - Colindale - that very morning! Anyway thats another story.
At the NMM, there is on display a 1/48th scale KGV!!! How long? maybe 10 feet?
Sorry, they dont allow pictures to be taken. Details got to be seen to believe.
Anyone want plans of ships, I have got some to share. Contact me.
Also, HMS Repulse and HMS Prince of Wales. Scratch build, any takers. These are of historical significance. Plans sudah ada.
I have got Russian Nanuchka / Tarantul in 1/72 cale in progress. Pix on the way.
Completed and collecting dust....BB62 in 1/192scale ( about 4 1/2 feet long.)
Thats all for now... got to go on hols!
Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year, Richie and all.

oh my goodness...
this is the first time i saw a local ship builder....u must be hell of a sailor my friend...
i love this ship...i have this plan to buy the WE (the Queen Elizabeth class) kit in 1/700 that cost like a bomb and due to that i have to keep that aside...
and now i see this ship here...what a job...
stunning..i feel like a Malaysian Idol judge evaluation a masterpeice infront of me
u got a very good scratbuilding skill not to mention car puttying skill..
based on ur story, are u planning to commercialised this kit??
good job once again

Ah! the Saxton..... was I think a variant of the M7 Priest.
The M7 Priest a self propelled gun tank had a 75mm howitzer where else the Saxton was a modified Priest with a 25 pounder instead.
Charlie....got any photo to share ah?
Richard.

New Year Greetings to one and all.
Just back from HK. And what a good harvest of modelling books and supplies. Not forgetting those kits!!! I got a 1/250 Shinano! (Doyusha)
Well I finally got a book on HMS Malaya (and the Barham as well) and its got all the line drawings
to allow me to finally complete an accurate model of HMS Malaya.
More progress pix coming soon, watch out for this space.
As for the Saxton pix, coming also, soon. (Actually it is better to see it yourself, Rich.)
Thats all for now.

Hi Charlie,
Would love to see Sexton in person but funds won't permit (can dream only) so I'll settle for 35th scale.
On the subject of ships, good for you. Will look forward to your ships progress and pictures.
If I'm not mistaken, were you the one who told me that I would be opening a can of worms if I started on 1/700th scale ships? Judging by my slow output in finished models it may look like it but I'm enjoying the hell out of it.
So far I've completed the IJNS Haruna etched metal 'n' all and am progressing with two destroyers and light cruiser to fit a harbor diorama.
If I know you, you're damn fast. So when do you reckon you'll complete the 'Malaya'?
Richard.

charlie130 - January 12, 2007 02:19 AM (GMT)
You see that book? Thats the greatest xmas gift of all. Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it in UML, HK!!! and there was the HMS Barham as well. Sure enough I did not let go of them.
This book will help me complete the ship accurately. When? probably not in quite a while even tho I am building everyday.
Since getting this book, I have had to backtrack to rebuild a number of parts, since most of my earlier references were based on the HMS Warspite. Same class of battleship but look closely, all five ships in the class are quite different. Except for the hull and guns off course.
For size comparison, this time I have included a ruler and a 1/500 scale ship of the Revenge class battleship kindly provided by Silver.
All the parts are of course scratch built, if you didn't know by now. Yeah, you can buy the hull and many parts in the market, but that will take the fun out of building. Anyway, I am not bound bu a deadline, that's the fun of it. I may have to eventually buy the Quad guns off the market, don't fancy scratch building them.
Question: Anyone know how to cast stuff in resin?
Need to cast the turrets and main guns and also a whole lot of itsy-bitsy stuffs
That's all for now...
