kerastangan - November 28, 2006 07:37 AM (GMT)
Hmmm I don't have anything related to malaya in my stash...perhaps a visit to LHSs is required. I do however have a number of TUDM planes plus the Japanese Type 95 and 97 tanks in my completed collection.
beachbum - November 28, 2006 08:24 AM (GMT)
At this point in time only 2 alternatives come to mind. One is to do a scale version of the Tugu Kebangsaan probably in 1/35. Should be able to convert some existing figures.
The second alternative is to do a vignette featuring either the SAS or SBS in the East Malaysian jungles during the confrontation. Not sure which way I'll go but I should be able to confirm by year's end when things settle down.
druid_99 - November 28, 2006 08:40 AM (GMT)
What about the Ferret Scout Car? I'm not promising but I can do some research and maybe scratchbuilding that tiny little armoured vehicle. Is it valid or invalid?
By the way, if it is valid, any idea on what type is it(Mark 1,2 or other)?
PoohBear - November 28, 2006 09:04 AM (GMT)
Sorry to interrupt - what's a vignette? Is it different from a dio?
masterqq - November 28, 2006 09:09 AM (GMT)
druid_99,
Ferret Scout Car, sure can, I think it was used by PDRM and Army..
BTW, ATM Feret in action .

kerastangan,
TUDM models and Jap models in action in Malaya are OK, you are most welcome to show us your collection, but one of the purpose of the GB is to promote build, so start get your hand dirty...
I think any in progress staff now are allowed to enter..... Moderators.. please advice.
druid_99 - November 28, 2006 09:12 AM (GMT)
Ok, if it is valid, then what scale should I build it into? 1/35th? 1/24th? 1/72nd? (nah... too small). Please advise... at least I can be the rep for auto modelers... :D

Actually it can be quite difficult as to what falls into either category but basically a vignette:
1. has a very simple storyline.
2. tends to be relatively smaller in size,
3. most often does not offer viewing from all angle, meaning one particular angle is covered and not detailed. Not always a rule though.
For example, a simple detailed base which acts more as a stand can be a vignette. Hope that clears things up a bit.
As for scale Imran if Thomas and Loo is ok with it, I think we should keep it open to all scales to provide those interested with flexibility.
druid_99 - November 29, 2006 01:01 AM (GMT)
Thanks CK,
I myself are thinking of building it in 1/35th scale as I think it will be more suitable for the car to "blend-in" with all the other builds. I can use the tyres from what is available as the same tyre types are hard to find in other scale.
Furthermore, any bigger than that, I would have to build the interior as well and any smaller that that, then the detail will be lost.
beachbum - November 29, 2006 01:12 AM (GMT)
From what I've seen of your latest sci-fi scratchbuilding effort the Ferret should be really easy for you Imran.
druid_99 - November 29, 2006 01:19 AM (GMT)
Thanks again CK,
Well, each build has its own challenges and I'm sure that this scratchbuild will have its own challenge as well. I have the actual measurements and simple diagram of the ferret scout car and will start with the scaled measurement and sketches in a few days.
By the way, in order to get things going, I would like to suggest that each build to be included a standardized title, for example my build will be like this:
50th Merdeka Group Build: 1/35 Ferret Scout Car
Another thing... what about the end date? Will it be on 31st August 2007 or earlier?

Yes it may be good idea to standardized the title. As for the completion date we'll have to see what Thomas and Loo decide as they may want do something as a run up to Aug 31, 2007.

@beachbum - thanks :D
Not so blur now.

Nope, don't think so. Furthermore, scratchbuilding is free... I don't have to fork out a single sen because all the things are already available like plastic sheets (I got loads of them... size measures by feet not cm  ), glue, epoxy putty and others...
As for the tyres, I think there are some at my friends scrap box and for the decals, I have the decal sheet and can borrow my friends laser printer and skill (to trace the logo) for the decals.
So, most of the stuffs are there.. I only have to look for the motivation and time only...
Thanks for the suggestions though. B)
beachbum - November 29, 2006 02:48 AM (GMT)
I'd go with Imran on this coz the AA kit although fantastic costs a bomb. If I'm not mistaken its around 50++ pounds for something that will fit into a child's palm. Beautifully detailed kit though just like their fantastic LR, a definite must have but alas just as painful on the wallet. :(

Brian, glad to know that you will be chipping in. I heard from Aidy that you have a wonderful collection on all things Malaysia. Mind sharing some pics in this part of the woods?
BTW Thomas, great momentum going here. You want to set some deadlines as you are the resident veteran on the Malaya/Malaysia campaign ala merdeka event.
I understand that Richard has a good collection of ships which are relevant too.
Anyone willing to do single figures?

Guys.. so far so good. 10 entries now... but we need more ... the more the merrier...
Yes, I would like to suggest the dead line to be 20th Aug 2007.
As this is the on line GB, this will allowed the moderators some time to do the necessary compilation, there is also a suggestion to upload the completed projects to the yearly ARC Merdeka parade to share the work to the world.
BTW, we can always organize a show day later.. maybe on Merdaka day..
Alpha7 - November 30, 2006 03:14 AM (GMT)
I may be able to do a dio or something with my British 25-pounder but have to do some research first.
cptan, how about a 1/16 scale Tunku Abdul Rahman? :D

Ooops...sorry Thomas we missed out your query. Actually we haven't firm up all the details but I'm sure Loo will be ok on this that we should keep it loose enough to allow for old, new and in-progress builds. After all, its a fun build and in many ways remind us of the deeds of those people/vehicles/events/campaigns who contributed to our nation's history.
The only thing I would like to propose is that submissions be accompanied with some history how the person or the equipment was employed in Malaya. Better still if the location where it was used is given and what has happened to him/her or the equipment. If its a dio than perhaps some background on the event. For me its the history bit that makes the GB more interesting. My 2 cts. though.
Loo CK - November 30, 2006 05:56 AM (GMT)
CP, 110% support for adnan. He was briefly mentioned in the singapore burning book. Horrific way to die though!
How about one of tunku? Merdeka!

Wouldn't it be something if the national museum could spare us a corner or the national history museum? Siapa ada jalan?
masterqq - November 30, 2006 06:48 AM (GMT)
beachbum, Loo CK... maybe we have to sit down to iron out the rules..
Alpha7, good choice on the 25 pounder.. here is a pic I found in the net..the battle at Parit Sulong.. anybody know what happened there..
Alpha7 - November 30, 2006 06:55 AM (GMT)
Here's something about Parit Sulong taken from Wikipedia
| QUOTE |
On January 23, 1942, Parit Sulong was the site of a massacre committed against Allied soldiers by members of the Imperial Guards Division of the Imperial Japanese Army. A few days earlier, the Allied troops had ambushed the Japanese near Gemas and blew up a bridge there.
During the Battle of Malaya, members of both the Australian 8th Division and the Indian 45th Infantry Brigade were making a fighting withdrawal when they became surrounded near the bridge at Parit Sulong. The Allies fought the larger Japanese forces for two days until they ran low on ammunition and food. Able-bodied soldiers were ordered to disperse into the jungle, the only way they could return to Allied lines; for the approximately 110 Australians and 40 Indians who were too badly injured to escape, the only option was surrender.
The wounded prisoners of war were kicked and beaten with rifle butts by the Imperial Guards. At least some were tied up with wire in the middle of the road, machine-gunned, had petrol poured over them, were set alight and (in the words of Russell Braddon) were "after their incineration — [were] systematically run over, back and forwards, by Japanese driven trucks." (Braddon, p. 101) Anecotal accounts by local people also reported POWs being tied together with wire and forced to stand on a bridge, before a Japanese soldier shot one, causing the rest to fall into the Simpang Kiri river and drown
Two wounded Australians managed to escape the ensuing massacre and provide eyewitness accounts of the Japanese treatment of wounded prisoners of war. Official records indicate that 150 wounded men were killed.
Lieutenant General Takuma Nishimura was later convicted for his part in the Parit Sulong massacre by an Australian Military Court and was hanged on June 11, 1951. He had been already convicted by a British court to life imprisonment for the Sook Ching massacre. [1] |
Loo CK - November 30, 2006 09:05 AM (GMT)
I agree with CK. It has to be historically relevant and as accurate as possible. In the days to come, I will summarise the text for the planned dio I intend to complete.
RX-78-2 - December 8, 2006 10:39 AM (GMT)
Loo, I wish to join this party. but i still have no idea what to build...
must do some survey first, then check what kits to be sacrificed!!!
how about the old history like the Parameswara found the Melaka, or the Dutch invade Melaka...etc...????

RX, Hang tuah and his warrior mates!

It's a great event that can't be miss, but currently I don't have a single build related to Malaysia... any suggestions?
Silantra - December 14, 2006 02:10 AM (GMT)
this is wonderful idea..
but i dont have anymore malaysian stuff in my stash....ops..i have a scorpion..
yeah..perhaps this is another way to boost up my morale again
worst come to worst, i would 'scrathbuild' a 1/35 jalur gemilang to be given to all figures that take part in this event..hehe
Loo CK - December 14, 2006 11:37 AM (GMT)
Bro Zaidi,
welcome back after a long break! Hope you are settling in in the new office.
As for this little group build, it will be planned more thoroughly after the airport 06 event. I think we have enough enthusiasm here to put on a good show. As for suggestions, a dio of the photograph showing the Japanese soldiers against the railway station background would be wonderful! The tamiya figures can all be used without modification!
At the moment if everyone agrees, we have to kick start this early and get at least some of the models done bu February so that we can get a working paper done with some nice coloured shots of the 'collection' in anticipating that some company or govt institution will be attracted enough to sponsor a venue for display. How does this sound?
Anyone else has contacts to display this collection at someplace meaningful?

RX, if conversion is too difficult, maybe you can do a scene with the British 25pdr kit firing away. The Tamiya kit is ok without any conversion!
Alternatively, the retreat of British soldiers on the main trunk road. (1 universal carrier and the walking infantry set would do the trick)
As for the Malacca scene, a dio near the Stadhuys building would be nice, maybe by converting one of the Dragon kits of German soldiers on horseback to those of a sultanate guard!
RX-78-2 - December 15, 2006 05:51 AM (GMT)
i not sure at those time got horse in malacca...
most of the old P Ramlee show only jalan kaki eventhough for the bendahara or laksamana
actually i dun mind to do conversion, just need to get a good story line about the dio!
