Hope to see more Huey builds springing up.
Argrillion - November 10, 2006 03:16 AM (GMT)
Nice built Jason. It does look like you had a wonderful time with the decals.
Bomber Vince - November 10, 2006 03:34 AM (GMT)
Jason,
Very geng (cantonese) Huey U have there, I have a 1/72 only, for my 1/72 airbase Dio. need ur consultancy when I start building.
PoohBear - November 10, 2006 03:59 AM (GMT)
Thanks Kenny, for your kind words.
The decals did take up a lot of the built time. <_<
@ Bomber Vince - Thanks for your nice words. I would be glad to assist with your built to the best of my ability though I think that you would have no trouble by yourself at all judging from your current and past builts efforts.
BTW, for those not in the know, for the 1/35 Hueys, Academy does not give instructions nor provide the parts for two of the main rotor control rods. Wierd thing to miss as this is a prominent feature of the Huey. You can use stretch sprue to replace or some of the other rods in the kit should do it (I can't remember the part# for it) or some styrene rods should do the trick. Do check out the box cover picture or any other reference pic.
Thanks for looking.

Very impressive indeed... Now I know whom to consult when I decide to build a Huey one day...hehe
wuichong - November 10, 2006 04:59 AM (GMT)
u r my reference, nice built dude.
PoohBear - November 10, 2006 07:12 AM (GMT)
Wuichong & Mattbok, thank you very much for the honours, although it was just a simple OOB built. Just ask away and I'll try to assist as best I can remember.
Now I am under pressure leh...hehehe scared cannot 'rise' to occasion when required.
masterqq - November 10, 2006 07:32 AM (GMT)
wah... very nice.. I saw it in ARC yesterday, I didn't know it was yours.. I already save your pictures for my referance later... :D
modelstarter - November 10, 2006 07:34 AM (GMT)
nice work poohbear i hope my UH-1C will some day look like yours :D
PoohBear - November 10, 2006 08:32 AM (GMT)
Hi modelstarter & masterqq - thank you very much. :D
@masterqq - I liked the built you had in your thread. If my simple built can be of some use to you and others, than I am honoured to have served. :D
@modelstarter - Every built is an adventure with good days and bad days, achievements and mistakes. With the support of your parents and SMM / SFTPMS + the internet, I am very sure your skills can only improve and in time to come your builts will start to look even better than mine. Look forward to seeing your progress. And BTW, all the best in your exams.
Happy modelling and thanks for looking.

Hello everyone :D
This is just to let you guys who are currently doing or going to start on your UH-1C's projects in on some technical details of the Huey for a more accurate built.
These are coming from an ex-Huey pilot gentleman (134th AHC 2nd Platoon Demon68) who was actually in 'Nam. He wrote to me about my built on ARC and has kindly given his permission to share his knowledge of this whirlybird.
1. Armour seats are olive drab all over and the seatbelts are silver/gray in colour.
2. The side armour plating on the seats slides back/forth for pilot access and the top of this plate is at minimum shoulder height or higher for sitting pilots. Pilots would duck their heads under this plate for protection from bullets!!
3. If you build with the 40mm grenade launcher or 'chunker', the bird will sit noticeably nose low. W/o the 'chunker', the B/C/D model sits level or just slightly nose down.
4. They had black servicemen so it is okay to have this kind of crew variety.
5. They carried into combat not only American troops but groups of local South Vietnamese Army and Korean Troopers as well. This should make for interesting dioramas.
Please PM me if you are interested to contact (he has given permission) this gentleman for more information about the Huey or the Air Cav in Vietnam.
Hope this helps your Huey build out and Happy Modelling.
Jason K.
ps. Sorry for long post

PoohBear, I'm sure that your "long post" will be a good reference for all of us who wish to work on huey project later. Thanks for sharing. Better stock a few hueys in my list first, time for shopping.

I've noticed on the build sheet instructions to the "Nose Art" Huey, Academy have rectified their mistake!
The rotor control rods are part numbers B44 and are shown in the inset frame on Page 6 of the build sheet.
BTW Jason, great to see your Heavy Hog here - yours is the "benchmark" for me. I'll be happy if my build is half as good...
Vinsanity - April 22, 2009 11:03 PM (GMT)
Excellent job with the build. Im thinking my next model will be a Huey. If mine looks half as good as yours i will be satisfied =] question: whats a nice, inexpensive (i cant afford academy and tamiya and all that jazz), large-scale Huey model?
PoohBear - April 23, 2009 12:40 AM (GMT)
Hi vinsanity and welcome to SMM. :)
Thanks for the kind words.
Good choice to build a Huey!
Other than Academy, you can try Revell, Italeri, Panda (not sure if its still around), Dragon (this one's on the more expensive side with photo etch & stuff).
Don't know what your budget is but you really can't go wrong with Academy's kit if you're willing to spend a bit. It's detailed and impressively large too. Can probably go for under RM80 with a good discount, if I'm not wrong.
Do post your WIP and the guys will provide guidance if you need. If you're around town, drop by HHQ on Saturdays. You'll find most of the guys hang around there after 12pm and are more than willing to help if you ask. :)
cheers and happy Huey-nting

PoohBear - April 23, 2009 08:29 AM (GMT)
Yes old chap. And also the other GBs which are in the running or we'll all suffer main rotor failure. ^_^
landyshah - April 23, 2009 08:34 AM (GMT)
LOL im already autorotating, hope dont crash :D
PoohBear - April 23, 2009 08:43 AM (GMT)
You should be alright. At least you have some updraft from your 'oxygenator' device for a soft landing. For those who don't have this though..... ^_^
