FROG- Rovex
Dassault Mirage IIE/O
Kit No. F400
1/72nd. scale
No. of parts : 38
Wing span 4 1/2 inches
Decal options: French AF & RAAF

This is not quite as rare a kit as many of the defunct FROG are, perhaps due to the fact that the Mirage hardly rates as one of the most popular of models. The IIIE is slightly longer than the IIIC and this does show up on the model, otherwise there is little to distinguish between the IIIE and the O built in Australia ( for the RAAF ), however the French spots a bump under the nose.
The kit is well molded in dark grey plastic and is pleasant to make up with no snags, a good fit of parts and little filling required. Choice of alternate parts is limited to the versions supplied namely a IIIE of the Escadron de Chasse 1/3 Navarre,1972 and a IIIO/A of No.3 Sqdn.,RAAF Butterworth,Malaysia.

Hi Mig21 and Sabrejet,
A good resource for Cheetahs would be the IPMS South Africa Website. You may need to subscribe for free to their pictures gallery by once in, you will find the mother load of line drawings, pictures, walkarounds and information on the Mirage F1-AZ, F1-CZ, Mirage3EZ and of course lots of Cheetahs. Z being the suffix for South Africa.

AIRFIX DOUBLE KITMirage IIIC vs MiG 15
Kit No. D363F
1/72nd. scale

The basic kit ( No.292 )Dassault Mirage IIIC in Series 2 is certainly no "golden oldie" far from it the fit of parts left alot to be desired however time with the body putty put a lot to rights. The detail lines are quite high and require " wet and dry" treatment - still it is generally good in outline and makes up to a version different any other. Whether or not this is due to design or accident , in place of the SEPR 884 rocket motor under the rear of the fuselage there is a ventral strake.
The decal sheet is rather sparse with just the tail flash stating this is No.18 Mirage III, roundels, Mirage IIIC nose name, Snecma Atar 9 and large no. 18. The red bands around the intake and wing walk have tobe hand painted.

Hi Sabrejet,
Oh....dear....this kit brings back great memory.
I remember my brother built this kit set and I used to play with them whenever he was not around.
The Mideast War had just ended when the kit was released.
So it was great to own a Mirage III that was very succesful in the war.
1 even had a 13 kills.
Below are some rare photos sent by a Swiss friend.
He actully sent me these photos hoping I will build a 1:32 model for this bird.
Notice those photos. They were taken at the same angle but for different aircraft.
1 is BLACK and 1 is WHITE.
Next I will post some SAF souvenirs I got from him.

MiG,
Here is a Heller kit I've not built because of the odd scale of 1/50th, that's about 4% difference to a 1/48th scale.

Hi Sabrejet,
Thanks for the nice posting on the rare Mirage III kits.
I have never seen them in my life.
You noticed how much the artworks have changed before and now.
Great!
Any more? 1:48.....1:32.....
Oop....encl here is a patch I got from my Swiss friend.
He was fascinated that I from Malaysia was interested on their SAF Mirages and F-5E.

"Matchbox" Lesney Products
MIRAGE IIIC/J
Kit No. PK-20
1/72nd. scale

This is by far the better of the IIIC kits even though it is not new, the moulding is very good. The construction, although at first sight more complicated than the Airfix as the lower wing section is in three parts rather than one, is infact a better fit and in general an easier kit to make. There is however one minor snag which ratherdetracts in as much as the model is cast in two rather unlikely colors, R.A.F. blue and pale blue which requires a pale grey spray before the standard silver finish. Another poin worth noting is that the leading edges of the air intakes require a light sanding as they should curve towards the nose when viewed in the plan form. Another point worth taking care over is the undercarriage which is extremely fine and delicate, when located and cemented it must have at least twelve hours to set. One point of interest concerning the undercarriage doors is that there are more photographs of the two central flaps in the up position than down. This is one of the many strange things which the modeler comes across and is explained by the fact of these two flaps opening and closing again when the wheels pass through - however the model looks better when they are "up".
You get two sets of decals either for the 3e Escadre de Chasse Escadron 111/2 Alsace (1968) or a IIICZ of No.2 Cheetah Squadron South African Air Force.

Hi ALL,
The reissued 1:32 Revell Mirage III comes with the beautiful Cartograph printed
decal.
You get Swiss AF, France AF and 2 x RAAF.
Doubt you can get this kit here. Maybe Singapore.

Kim,
Any idea if the kit is available in the UK? Someone might be heading there and I can ask this guy to look for one. By the way, where's the RAAF 3rd and 75th emblems. Don't see it there?

Hi Bub,
Yes, you can get this kit in UK, Europe and Australia.
I think it selling like 25 pound.
I got mine from Australia.
Sorry about the incomplete decal.
Now I remember I cut and scan this portion of the decal for my Swiss friend
in exchange for Swiss AF's cap and watch.
I kept the RAAF version in the box.
Later I will scan and post the kit and complete decal.
New place is still in a messlah.

Sabrejet,
What a kill by the IAF's Mirage.
Wow...luckly not my favourite MiG 21!
Bud,
Here is the portion of the decal for RAAF - 3rd & 79th Sq.
Guys,
If you are looking for the kit with the RAAF decal here is the correct reissue box.

Hi Sabrejet,
Nice little Kfir. I think I might have 1 too built in the 90s.
Have to ask HM where I put it.
Here come the KFir!
Oops..... just to follow up with the RAAF Mirage III.
Just got this new 1:32 RooDecal from Perth. My friend is tempting me to build up the RAAF collection.
For 1:32 Mirage III kaki, a double seater set resin is coming out soon from Australia.
This decal comes with a marking for a "Playboy Mate" RAAF dual seater!

Sailors and airmen,
Great to see more progress on Mirages. Those 3rd and 79th sqdn decals are really tempting. I've been away for almost 10 days in UK due to work commitments but the best part was I've also made it to Hendon, Colindale. No Mirage on display there as of yet but I rekon there will be one, one day.
Anyway, in Hyperscale today, a small model company is producing the Atar engine exhaust pipe for the Mirage kit. Worth trying out.

Hi Bud,
Sorry to hear you can't find a 1:32 Mirage in UK. Apparently Australia sapul all the kits. Even buyers from Europe have to get them from Australia.
Something big is happening in Australia. Dealers are stocking up the kit like gula here.
My Aussie friend told me the dual seater resin is going to be out soon.
Also a guy has produced a complete set of all RAAF Miarges in 1:32 decals.
Out of 26, I only got 2 of them!
Is the Atar resin in 1:32?
Hi ALL,
If you have Rm2M to spare, you can have this Mirage park in your garden.
It went on sale last year.
Too bad I only have a spare of Rm2 then!
Bud Bilko - September 28, 2006 01:57 AM (GMT)
Mig 21,
Me not talking on a 32nd scale, I'm talking 1:1 scale!! Having two 32nd scale is far too much for me but finding another one for someone is an added bonus. The Atar resin is for 32nd kit and you should get one. Nice...
The Aussie is stock pilling the kit due to the release of the two seater conversion. Depa takut hang beli 20....tarak stock langsung.

Hi Bud,
You read my mind very well.
That is a very close to the no. of Mirage III kit, I intended to get.
We plan to build all the Air Forces that operated the Mirage III.
They were 14 operators.
The rest of the kits are for RAAF schemes or more if required.
Now waiting for more resin parts to come out and lotery strike before venturing into this project.
Thanks for info on the Atar jet resin part.

Specially posed, this majestic vic of 3 Mirages proves just how effective tactical camouflage can be over urban areas somewhere in France.

G-man - September 30, 2006 04:03 AM (GMT)
MiG21 comrade, those are Spanish Mirages, but how to tell they were over France? I ask cos there doesn't seem to be any clue to indicate them being over France in any way.
Then again, some of the houses look Victorian in nature and it could well be over England. Not like it's unlikely seeing as how the Spaniards have a pretty good relationship with both the French and the English.
MiG21 - September 30, 2006 03:29 PM (GMT)
Hi G-Man,
You have sharp eyes.
Those were Belgium's Mirage 5.
I guess they were flying over somewhere in Belgium, not France or UK.
I remember I showed these photos to a group of USM students who has no idea what camouflage was all about.
Those 2 pics help to illustrate the point.
At high speed, anyone will lose those aircrafts in a cat and mouse game.
Thanks.

Thanks for the correction comrade. I thought the Germanic looking fin flash was a little odd therefore I was guessing they were Spanish mirages, obviously not. But hey, yes, the camo is effective at high speed when trying to eyeball something going at great speed.
