Title: Photos As a Reference for Dioramas
Description: Weblinks

beachbum - August 9, 2006 04:44 AM (GMT)
Hi All,

As the dio section doesn't really have a resource section as it is indirectly represented in the other Resource sections (i.e. Malaya) I thought I'd start a little thread for those who are seeking inspiration (mine is usually from sitting on the potty) or need photo references of the real thing.

The links below are mainly on post WWII conflicts. I hope they will be of use and Loo and I welcome all forumers to help add to this list. The more we share the more we learn.

Good photo site for recent conflicts
Photos & some Articles
General Non-combat related photovault
Post WWII conflicts involving British forces

Both Loo and myself hope to see contributions for all of you. Thanks.

I don't have any pictorial reference to share right now but have some ideas for dioramas.

1. Shipwreck on sea-bed - e.g. Bismarck
- one might have to do extensive research on the damage, missing turrets etc. Make it a 1/350th scale. It'll be breathtaking!

2. Diorama of war scene in Black and White (similar to photo but in 3D).

Interesting ideas there Xamel. As for Bismark for anyone wanting to do her in her current watery grave there is an issue of National Geographic with good photos of how she looks today. Can' t remember the issue just right now though.

Apart from my earlier list of photo references for post WWII conflicts which I have reproduced below here are some on the Vietnam conflict:

Modern Day Conflicts
Good photo site for recent conflicts
Photos & some Articles
General Non-combat related photovault
Post WWII conflicts involving British forces

Vietnam Era
Good variety of photos
Very good site on the brownwater navy including photos
wide variety of color & bw photos
Good photos for "Mood" dios
History & Photos
Lots of Vietnam related links

I hope there aren't any blind links as it has been a while since I visited some of these sites.

Here's one with a lot of photos to go through...

Check out the "WWII German soldier photographs from the Russian Front" series. There're thousands of photos to flip through.

First off thanks Alpha7 and Wuichong. Your contribution to the cause is appreciated Adrian.

In response to Xamel's suggestion the next few photos were taken from National Geographic Magazine, November 1989 issue. It narates the search as well as the events leading to her final moments together with personal accounts of her survivors. There are also lots of actual photos. The first is an artist impression of the Bismark at the bottom of Davy Jones locker. The small insert at the top left corner shows the sequence how she ended up at the bottom at 15,617 feet.

The next is a painting depicting her slide down an underwater plain.

The last is a sad reminder on the man's senseless, wasteful and totally meaningless means of settling disputes.

May her crew find everlasting peace that has been denied during their lifetime.

As an asides, while everyone knows about it I'm sure, but as a small note please use any photos posted here or the Resource section for discussion and personal use only and do give credit to the owners (in this case its National Geographic) of the photos if you use them in other forums. Thanks for your kind cooperation in this matter.

Incidentally the same issue above has another nice story with photos of Hue, Vietnam which I've used as a reference. Potential Reference material for dios are not restricted to military based books/photos/expensive modeling books as proven by this National Geographic issue and I've used several in some of my dios.

Thanks for the links Beachbum. Actually, for the Bismarck idea, both of us (Xamel and me) got the idea from the exact same National Geographic magazine. I think we still have the book somewhere... need to dig in all the National Geographic stash as well as dig deeper in the wallet to get the 1/350 scale Bismarck...

I will try and look for other pictures to contribute in here. I think I saw a picture of a few German Junkers being loaded with bombs before take off in one of the old airplane books that I have... that can also be a great looking diorama. :)
