Title: Hacker Problem
Description: Betrayal From Within
Dragill - April 5, 2007 11:20 AM (GMT)
At some point recently, some has "hacked" Davids(AFH) servers, he caused them to crash, we know that this attacker 'can' hack, although he doesn't seem to bright and that he is a player of JKA, most possibly an Rper within a community. David has the certain IP, but he cannot give us the IP, I will not elaborate on how they go in, and we do not yet know of why. Plainly there is no reason, But I say now, if anyone knows anything of this please contact me, or post here. And if the 'hackers are reading this, STOP. David knows who you are, and is willing to take legal action if it is done again.
As well as asking to stop, I ask those responible to come forward, doing this would possibly prevent legal action being taken, David already knows who you are, and will releace it to the public when he knows for sure it is you.
In Davids own words:
| QUOTE |
| They are given two choices, come forward and admit their actions to myself or commit again and face legal action upon property violation law. |
I ask the community to remain vigelent, these hackers are in our midst, and may even be one of us, although I doupt that it is a possibility. I have already contacted Ohm about this with the specifics, any questions can be posted here.

Microsoft Windows has alot of vulnerabilities, vulnerabilities it shouldn't have to begin with and only compounded with easy to adjust administrative tools that most don't even require admin login to change sensitive data with. Aside from Kel hosting a backup game server, we run a tight shift around here, utilizing SELinux from the nation's NSA, and 1Tb of data can be restored with a push of a button and 8 minutes.

What's an AFH server?
Anyway, if it's "this" server, I know of a way to prevent the most common method for crashing JKA servers.

AFH is another good roleplaying community.
The help is appreciated but I'm afraid it won't be needed Ohms linux server protects us where Davids non-linux server doesn't protect him.
Oh, and they arn't using a common way :P Not that I know of anyway, it involves usaing actual server admin passwords (as in the server machine) and disabling CMDs which therefore restarts the server, causing all current servers to crash. It is punishable by law to do this, it is also know as tresspassing on privite material.

Is it Windows XP or Vista and what firewall is the server using? I'm pretty well versed in Windows security.

buffer overflow, cprintf, yeah, it would be fixed but i've been too lazy to do it and kept hitting the reset button on my phone.

Oooh, there should definitely be a firewall independent of the router... otherwise it's asking for trouble.
Anyway, here's something which may fix it. I don't know, though, since I don't have specifics.
Open the Local Security Policy window by typing secpol.msc /s in the run box.
Go to Local Policies --> Security Options
Disable the following:
- Accounts: Administrator account status
- Accounts: Guest account status
- Domain member: Disable machine account password challenges
That might be a good way to circumvent a few things.

hardware firewalls (cisco pix) in my experience have been the best for checkpoints but individual computers essentially need software firewalls these days since those catch outbound traffic sending information which is what i'm placing my bets on is what occured
