Modeling= Hard and to be done right, Costs money.
Skinning= Easy, if you know how. Costs, nothing.

Just some advice, Skinning is alot better to take up than modeling.

Both of them are extremely simple to learn. The hard part is learning and the time reuqired to polish traditional skills.

If you cant draw, paint or sculpt, I suggest you begin there. Texturing is nothing more than digital painting and modelling is 3d sculpting.

Costs money? Sure, you need to buy photoshop and a decent 3d application that is supported by 3rd party applications that allow importing jka files, such as 3DSMAX.

3dsMax, Maya, XSI and all the popular modelling programs in the business cost around $3000-$5000 U.S., if you are a student they can cost around $500.

I repeat: Your modelling and texturing skills will only be proportional to your traditional skills.

Open source community has free alternatives. The Gimp, etc, etc.

Free is usually limited.
You are not performing state of the art models here, though so you shant worry about that.

However, if you learn modelling, I guarantee you´ll wish to expand upon it and that means beyond the obsolete technlogy of jka2. Perhaps even high polygon modelling. Free programs usually have less reliable tools and support. They work for the initial purpose here and certainly a start....

If you're looking to make a full time job out of modeling, by all means take courses at a university somewhere. The Gimp has yielded many items with photoshop quality or better and is completely free. There are a few modeling programs out there that are open source as well that do read max files and milkshape. There's a open source MMO being made with it, and has UT2K4 quality modeling options.
