Title: Character Interaction Vs Combat?
Dragon - March 1, 2007 04:08 PM (GMT)
I was talking to zeph the other day on Xfire…and surprisingly he brought up quite an interesting topic so I decided to write it here also. Its not an issue, or something to be enforced but thought it might be interesting to discuss (or quite simply, because I’m bored shitless at work it gives me something long to type up to take about 10min :P)
Basically, its about how a great deal of Rps all come down to combat lately…yes we have a war system and factions with power trying to topple the Empire etc, but even the most basic of Rps all come down to combat instead of character interaction. One of the best days of characters interacting I have to admit, was when the UA was first made, we saw soldiers and Jedi getting along, friendships formed and generally it felt like the group cared about one another. A lot of the missions did come down to combat, but in between that there was a lot of interaction.
Sitting onboard the Liberator II, talking, visiting Dantooine and the polar region all the time, training together. There felt more of a sense of duty, with pilots being pilots, medics being medics etc…I miss that. Almost all stormtroopers these days are just cannon fodder and heroes, with few of them developing and interacting beyond their job. An average stormtrooper Rp involves one or two stormtroopers patrolling aimlessly, then moaning they are bored, meanwhile these stormtroopers could become friends, go to the bar, head off duty and discuss things.
I am going to try and create more interactive characters in terms of soldiers. What I think would be a cool scenario would be like a training academy on a planet like Bothawui. Alliance soldiers having dorms etc, training, field exercises and in the process being able to interact. It would be cool if people considered developing their stormtroopers more, because there not meant to be about just fighting, every stormtrooper being macho and tough, they need to develop also.
So essentially, we should try and steer away from combat, and use our minor characters to interact more. I get bored of the same scenario, and the same type of stormtroopers…all disobedient, all foul mouthed and emotionless.

The best RP's have been when Leo and Lamia have had a clash of wits, as opposed to a clash of sabers.

i also agree i liked the character interaction thats what i liked about lugormod it wasnt always about fighting because alot of it was talking and we had emotes and such it was awsome your character could level up easier and everything.I liked how our soldier system was you were a private until a certain level it made your job and such much easier. The admins could build items and such like Borrie's Clock tower on T2_trip.We also had credits in lugormod,it made jobs worth doing you earned money through RPing well thats all i hafto say about that.

I'm definitely for character interaction opposed to combat. The funnest RP's I've ever had were like that. And uh... psssst! That's why we need Holowan labs back :P
Dragon - March 2, 2007 01:53 PM (GMT)
Lol, Holowan was funny...it was full of misfits lol...
Cypher (Toyarian) - grumpy and strong headed
Rata (Quermian) - jolly and overly friendly
Chip (Jawa) - mischievous but a great scavenger
Flarn (Cartoon Yoda <_< ) - forgetful and useless
We need Mos Espa Outskirts back ;)

I agree with Kel, I love getting things done with my skill as a Roleplayer, and not my skill as a Fighter. I believe, since Ive created him, Borrie has only brought the end of Two people using his Lightsaber. A Vong, and Dex. Of course at first, Borrie did try to con Dex out of what he wanted, but it failed. Borrie has fought with a sword, but he only disabled one person with it really, and that was Tenal Rato, in which he let go in exchange for nothing.
The only true time Combat is fun is when the character is truely suited for it, and its practical. But yes, Conversations definatly "pizzownt" combat in terms of RP.
Why does Combat get resorted to so often? Because its free, and its always available. On the Emu I can see random combat be reduced signifigantly.

As in real life it should only be used as last resort, and i'am getting tired of imperials that don't want to start friendships, i've tried hard but seriously they need to loosen up (Imperial Storms and Knights)
Niftyeye - March 2, 2007 06:21 PM (GMT)
yea the other day when our 3 stormies were having a debate about who got the most kills, lmao
I dont see much combat on server but when i do its major and i usually ends up swallowing every character on there :P

Most stormtroopers are textbook idiots. People dont realize they can develop them well and get some great Rps. They are all too brave, too outspoken (always thinking 'fuck him') and too emotionless
Niftyeye - March 2, 2007 06:26 PM (GMT)
Well i dont make my stormtrooper gruff, but he does socialize with the other stormtroopers, hes pretty good friends with rambo and lag ect.
Plus i like rping when its Debalk (me) rodaen (cloud) and rambo (tasu) its not all centered around combat you know, plus we re in our own little 'groupie' :P
Kel - March 2, 2007 06:28 PM (GMT)
Some Stormtroopers are friends, you just havne't seen them being played. Lag and Vaati go way back, as do Locke and General Trip. Hell, Vaati walked in once on Lag "procreating" with Vikki while he was supposed to be on duty.
Tasu - March 2, 2007 06:40 PM (GMT)
Yeah would be fun for the stormies to actually befriend with eachother etc Rambo and Debalk is tight, would be fun if Rambo could befriend Lag aswell.
Niftyeye - March 2, 2007 07:32 PM (GMT)
Well debalks the laid back guy who likes to make a joke of everything and rambo is usually the one warning him to be careful lol
