Title: Saab man considers Jaguar
Description: Which Jag

Bostin - April 12, 2006 08:48 PM (GMT)
OK,
hands up I'm not looking for a £20k Jaguar, I'll be lucky to spend much more than £1k!!!

I currently run a 1987 Saab T16 Aero, which is a great drivers car, goes like a rocket with superb handling.

Always fancied a Jag though, watched a 1988 XJ6 go by on ebay for £410 tonight (reserve not met) and nearly bid. Can I really get that much car for so little money?

Anyway some opinions on the early to mid 90's jags would be appreciated, and some ideas of what to look out for.

Many thanks

£1 K???

maybe get an XJ40 but will need some work.

XJS will need a lot of work and you will need to keep on top of it.

If you can push to 3-4k you could get very good a X300 (94-97)
or if your lucky XJ8 (97)

I'm sure other members will post there opinions here....so check back often

Best of Luck!

I agree with Tony. You might be lucky for £1k, my XJ40 was p-exed for not much more and sold on at auction and all it needed was an oil pressure relief valve. Apart from my current car, it was probably the most pampered Jaguar on the road - er, OK, I'll retract that - most Jags are pampered.

There are stories of extreme bargains being picked up on Ebay, but I'd NEVER buy a Jag unseen first.

My biggest question for you - what is it going to be used for? Every day run-about or weekend show car? This is important as a Jag isn't at all thrifty around town and for short journeys. My current Jag isn't too bad, but that cost a lot more than £1k! My XJ40 did 4-5 mpg for the first 5 miles or so, and took a good 10 miles to get properly warmed up - this wasn't a problem for me as I worked 40 miles from home and I needed the comfort. A cross-town trip to work of 5 miles would cost you an arm and a leg. And wouldn't do the engine any good either!

I hope we haven't put you off too much...?

Jag ownership can be scary! :taz

Hi, If i was you i would have a good look around and try and find a good x300 but you may have to spend a bit more money to get a decent one but there are alot of nice ones about. Also if you could find one i seriously reccomend 4litre as i think they are the best engines to get. Personally i prefer cars with bigger engines than say a 3.2 as there a nicer ride and quicker

I owned a 1996 x300 soverign and it was a beautiful car and i loved it. but decided to sell it and get a series 3 xj12, which is great.

Personally i would not reccomend an XJ40 as i dont think they are the best and if you spent a bit more an x300 would be superb. but if you can only get an xj40 within your budget its not all that bad.

One of the Swallow members bought one on ebay quite cheap, so ebay is very good but you have to be very careful if buying online

If you want to know anymore but in detail
Feel free to pop along to your nearest jaguar club and no doubt you will get bucket loads of advice

Ian
