Title: The Seal Hunt

I'll be the first to admit that I'm not losing sleep over it, in fact, I find it hard to care, but I still can't help but feel that it's wrong.

I saw a poll on cnn.com (I think) and it asked readers to vote on whether they agreed with it or not. It was something like 45% yes and 55% no.

I would assume the vast majority of those voters would be international readers (as I was reading the international version).

There was a similar poll on ctvnews.com (mostly Canadian readers) asking the same question, and most Canadians said the hunt should be allowed to continue.

I can't help but feel like Canadians might be off on this one. The whole world is against it, and I think a lot of Canadians support the hunt just because so many others oppose it.

It's like when the Iraq war started, most Americans supported it, while the rest of the world was absolutely against it. We knew we were right, and they were wrong, but they just didn't get it.

Is this the case with the seal hunt? Are we supporting it as a way of saing "to hell with everyone else"? Partly, I think yes.

If I clubbed a dog to death, there would be outrage. I can't see how clubbing a seal is any more acceptable.

Look, here's my take on the thing, dispense with killing the seals by a club as it is too messy and use a shotgun instead. The gun is cleaner, quicker, and dare I say it, more humane. This way the propaganda of cruelty approach used by the activists is cut off and the sealers still make their money. As for Canada going against world opinion, I say it's about fuckin' time. Any other time we cower and whimper in the face of some other country's opinion. For once were not being a bunch of sheep. Besides, there are a helluva lot more imporant cruelties going on in this world other than the seal hunt. People need to get a life.

For the most part, the killing os seals is done by shotgun. One shot to the head. This is monitored by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. (Not heavily, but, monitored nonetheless.)

I think Canadians support it because it is a vital part of the economy for some of the small eastern towns. Cutting the hunt would leave about 20,000 people without jobs. Not only would that leave thousands of kids hungry, and their parents struggling, the rest of the taxpayers would be left footing the bill.

I don't disagree with the hunt. Part of me knows its wrong, but, the human part of me thinks that these people need to support their families more than 6 million seals need to be sliding around the ice floes shitting all over, and eating the Cod that are also a vital part of the economy.
